THE HEARTH TAX

Apart from the Domesday Book and the census results, it is said that the hearth tax records are the most important sources for England.

The hearth tax was required from 1662-1666 and from 1669-1674. A payment of 2/- per hearth was required to be paid by every householder in 2 installments, 25th March (Lady's Day) and 29th September (Michaelmas). Although the poorest didn't have to pay, they would have been listed as exempt.
